Our Monthly Seminar Series has been sponsored by Barrick.

Our first monthly seminar was held on the 19th October with guest speaker Silica Mathur, who is a U of T alumnus and recent graduate. She is currently working at Lundin Mining Corporation and is an executive at the Canadian Institute of Mining. She discussed networking and transitioning into the workplace from university. The event was very successful with a great turnout so thank you to everyone who came along. The talk was very informative to all who attended.

Our second monthly seminar was on the 23rd November, featuring guest speaker Alex Pernin. His talk discussed ‘Mining Companies and Money: Overview of Mining Financing and Mining Investment. Alex had a wonderful and engaging presentation with a brilliant Q&A section at the end.Alex is currently a mining research associate at Canaccord Genuity but he was an undergraduate in the Earth Sciences Department at U of T and also recently completed his Masters here in Economic Geology. At Canaccord Genuity, Alex helps investors make decisions through mining company valuations he conducts by visiting mine sites around the world and evaluating their productivity. He has extensive experience with sampling, core-logging and mine modeling and is awaiting Professional Geoscientist Designation (P. Geo) from the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO).

For our most recent guest speaker of the 2016/17 Seminar Series, we welcomed Alexandria Marcotte. Alexandria's talk discussed her "squiggly-line career path” through her career thus far, as well covering handling challenging work situations and tips she wish she knew before graduating. She also gave a technical session on the importance of 3D viewing and manipulation of drill data.

Alexandria is registered Professional Geoscientist, currently working as the Director of Exploration for California Gold Mining. She has a breadth of industry experience, having worked as an exploration geologist and a technical advisor, as well as part of a mine rescue team.

Thanks to everyone for what may well have been our best turnout so far for our speaker series! Our speaker was Nicole Januszczak who is the Targeting and Review Manager for De Beers Group of Companies in Canada and a U of T alum.

Nicole obtained her BSc., MSc., and PhD studying Cenozoic glaciation of Antarctica and Neoproterozoic “Snowball Earth” glaciation here at U of T. At DeBeers, she is responsible for the targeting and delivery of new economic diamond deposits. Her seminar on Diamond Exploration in Canada covered the fundamentals of the formation of diamonds, their violent eruption at Earth’s surface in kimberlites, and the exploration techniques used to find them.
